Mayweather vs Berto on September 12
Mayweather to retile on 49th fight
Mayweather says he will retire with a 49-0 record after his
September 12 meeting with Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a fight that
many are already labelling a mismatch. Mayweather admit his September blockbuster will be his career finale.
A hoarse Mayweather said on
Thursday: 'A good fight for him at this particular time is Errol Spence,
another welterweight top contender.
'No 49 - this is it. I've had a
tremendous career. I’m older, wiser, and my health is more important than
anything.'
After the 'Fight of the Century'
last time out against Manny Pacquiao, some critics have called out Mayweather's
choice of Berto as boring, but the reigning champion believes it is anything
but.
Berto has also two of his last four
fights but will still be a threat, Mayweather says.
'Andre
Berto is going to push Floyd Mayweather to the limit,' he said in Los Angeles.
'Come September 13, I don’t want you guys saying "damn I missed the
fight".
'The difference between Andre Berto
and Manny Pacquiao is that you guys put all the hype in Manny Pacquiao. That’s
what the media did.
'My job was to go out there and be
Floyd Mayweather, and be a chess player, and that’s what I did. I found a way
to win but this fight is a very very intriguing matchup.'
For his part, Berto says he was not
surprised to be selected as Mayweather's last opponent.
'I
know that it was a fight that was supposed to happen some time ago,' the
31-year-old said. 'At the same time I feel it was a fight that he still wanted
to make happen.
'Of course it’s easy for people to
downplay any situation but if it was anybody else I feel it would still be
something similar. I can’t worry about that, I’m not worried about that.'
