Nicklas Bendtner was the hero for Wolfsburg in the German Super
Cup final by scoring an 89th-minute equaliser before dispatching the
winning penalty against Bayern Munich.
It had looked straightforward for Pep Guardiola at the Volkswagen
Arena after the Bundesliga champions took a 49th-minute lead through Arjen
Robben.
Yet they underestimated Wolfsburg's secret weapon who, after
replacing Bas Dost in the 70th minute, beat his marker to send the game to
penalties, before winning it for the underdogs.
The former Arsenal striker hauled his side level at
the death before converting the decisive spot-kick to hand them victory.
Pep Guardiola's
champions looked on course when Arjen Robben gave them the lead four minutes
into the second half at the Volkswagen Arena.
The Dutch star
pounced to score after Wolfsburg had fail to deal with Douglas Costa's cross from the
left.
Wolfsburg manager
Dieter Hecking threw on Bendtner 20 minutes from time as they tried to find a
way back into the game.
Arturo Vidal was handed his debut by Guardiola, and
promptly received a yellow card for his second foul in just a few minutes.
His presence was
not where it was needed in the last minute of the game, though, as De Bruyne
broke down the right and delivered a cross which substitute Bendtner met at the
near post to bring the Wolves level and force a penalty shoot-out.
After Vidal and
Ricardo Rodriguez scored, Alonso saw his effort saved by Koen Casteel's foot.
Wolfsburg were
flawless from the spot, including Bendtner, who sent his effort into the top
corner to earn last season's cup winners the trophy.
