Rooney and Wilshere |
Jack Wilshere scored
two goals of the highest quality as the Arsenal midfielder inspired a
stirring second half fight back to completely change the mood.
Rooney netted a
winner in the closing stages of the game as Roy Hodgson's men did just enough
to claim victory in Ljubljana.
Hodgson did not
really give Wilshere a chance in the World Cup - not until it was too late -
and yet now they move forward with the 23-year-old central to his future plans.
However, in
Wilshere and Rooney they have a strong combination of the old and the
new which, if Hodgson can find the right blend around them, can form the
foundations of a successful new era.
Phil Jones’ poor throw-in gave the ball straight to Slovenia, the Manchester United centre half looking exposed as a makeshift right back.
Jones was hauled off after his error, Adam Lallana was sent on in his place but that meant Jordan Henderson was switched from midfield to right back.
Rooney and Wilshere were England’s heroes.
