Manchester
United confirmed the signing of The
Argentine shot-stopper goalkeeper Sergio Romero on a three-year deal.
Van Gaal told MUTV: 'Sergio Romero is an
international goalkeeper from the Argentina team.
'He was also a former player of
mine. I was trainer-coach, manager of AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, I picked
him up when he was 19 and he was a great talent. We became champions with him,
with a minor club, and in the Netherlands it was a fantastic result of course.
'I know him very well and I think in
our situation, if De Gea is going or not going, it is always a threat and we
have to take care, make sure that we are prepared and that is why I think it is
very good that Sergio Romero is now a Manchester United player.'
"Sergio
is a very talented goalkeeper. He was a young keeper during my time at AZ
Alkmaar and I am delighted he is joining Manchester United.
"He had a fantastic World Cup last summer in
Brazil, although that is something I have put to the back of my mind.
"He will be a great addition to the team and I am
looking forward to working with him once again.”
Romero played under Louis van Gaal
at AZ Alkmaar when they were crowned Eredivisie champions in 2009.

De
Gea has one year left on his current contract with United and has given no
indication of being willing to commit to a new £200,000-a-week deal.
United, for their part, are happy for him to walk away
for nothing less summer, unless an agreement can be reached that sees Ramos
move to Old Trafford.
On his move to United, Romero said: "I am
absolutely delighted to join Manchester United. To play for the biggest club in
the world is a dream come true for me.
"Louis
van Gaal is a fantastic manager and I cannot wait to get started on this new
and exciting challenge in my career.”
