David De Gea |
Louis
van Gaal fears David De Gea has played his last game for Manchester United –
but has warned he will not be sold on the cheap.
Van
Gaal admitted De Gea, who went off injured in Sunday's draw with Arsenal at Old
Trafford with 16 minutes left, is finding it hard to resist the lure of a
return to Spain with Real Madrid.
But
Van Gaal warned that United will not let De Gea go for anything less than their
valuation of him, despite the fact he has just one season left on his contract.
“With
every individual transfer it is a process, and it is a process for David De
Gea,” said Van Gaal.
“He
shall not leave us so easily, because we have a great club. But, of course, he
is Spanish, his girlfriend is Spanish, he can go to another great club and that
is for him to decide.
“He
has to decide, because we have given a fantastic contract because we want him
to stay.
"He
is a Spanish international, still behind Iker Casillas, now a Spanish club is
coming [in for him], his girlfriend is Spanish, his father and mother come
every week or every two weeks here, so it’s difficult.”
Although
it looks like De Gea has made his mind up to leave United after four seasons
and join Real, Van Gaal warned the 24-year-old to think twice about what he
will be leaving behind.
“I
don’t think I can persuade him because he knows everything he has at this
moment here at Manchester United,” said Van Gaal.
“So
I don’t have to say something in benefit of Manchester United, because he can
feel it every day. You have seen the fans, they are unbelievable. When he is
going, he is losing that. Here he has a lot of credit. He has to decide."
Asked
if Victor Valdes, the former Barcelona keeper who came on for his United debut
when he replaced De Gea, can fill the void if his compatriot leaves, Van Gaal
refused to be drawn.
“You
have to wait and see how we decide,” said Van Gaal. “I cannot say anything
about transfers or what I like to say to the players, because first I shall
talk with the players, then the media.”
